Tracking the Venezuela-linked Oil Tanker Reportedly Pursued by American Maritime Authorities

We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
