Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's tenure as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he noted that any determination is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

He has emerged as a high-profile opponent of the former president's team, using his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to withhold government money from California and suggested suspending the power to issue CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he said, after a recent fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was withholding additional funds from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration responded in a last month's statement addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recent poll showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
